1998 DuPont Company Top Gun Award calendar

Abstract:

DuPont Performance Coatings, Inc., was created in March 1999 by the merger of DuPont Automotive Finishes, a business unit of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and Herberts GmbH, the coatings subsidiary of the German chemical firm Hoechst AG. Automotive Finishes had once been part of DuPont's Automotive Products Dept., and DuPont had a long history in automotive finishes. Every year, DuPont invited users of the company's automotive paint products to submit photos of their work. Winners were chosen and their projects were featured in an annual calendar. The vehicles pictured in this calendar won the DuPont Top Gun Award for 1997. All are painted with DuPont Company automobile finishes.

Charles H. DeMirjian (1925-) was a packaging design manager with E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. He collected pictures, advertisements, and publications showing DuPont consumer products, as well as some of the products and packages themselves. The collection consists of brochures, advertisements, photographs, and ephemera showing DuPont Company consumer products from 1913 to 1984.

The Advertising Department representatives in each of the industrial departments worked with the central staff in creating ad campaigns. The collection consists of miscellaneous DuPont Company advertising materials, including postcards, pictorial envelopes, lantern slides, advertisements, display cards, and illustrated pamphlets.

DuPont Company automotive color bulletins

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. The Fabrics and Finishes Department produced DuPont's consumer lines of paints and finishes. Duco was a durable, quick-drying lacquer used for appliances. It was the standard finish for General Motors (GM) vehicles. Dulux was glossier, which made it more popular than Duco. This is a small collection of automotive color bulletins from the DuPont Company Finishes Division, Refinish Sales unit. The bulletins are arranged by model of vehicle. They were grouped together in binders over several years, presumably to show buyers or prospective buyers the color options available for each model car each year. The bulk of dates covered are 1935 to 1959 and 1968 to 1986.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company. The Moberly Plant was an automotive finishes plant in Moberly Missouri from 1968 through 1990. The plant manufactured topcoat paints used to repair or refurinsh vehicles. This collection consists of materials related to the former DuPont Company site in Moberly, Missouri, 1968-1990. Materials include newsletters, guides to the plant, a magazine, a yearbook, certificates, photographs, slides, and negatives.

DuPont Company South San Francisco Plant manufactured and packaged DuPont finishes such as Lucite paint, Duco laquers and Dulux enamels. The plant began operation in 1935. The collection consists of photographs, films and ephemera from the DuPont Company South San Francisco Plant.

DuPont Duco-Dulux advertising and sales aid

Abstract:

Chemists at DuPont’s Parlin, New Jersey laboratory produced a pyroxylin lacquer in 1920 called Viscolac and improved upon it in the following years and renamed it Duco. In the late 1920s Dulux was developed, which was an alkyd finish and had a higher gloss finish; a matte version of Dulux was also developed. This collection is a packet of advertising and sales aids for dealers of DuPont Duco and Dulux paints and finishes.

In 1904 the DuPont Company purchased the International Smokeless Powder and Chemical Company, which was then producing smokeless powder and nitrocellulose products in their plant in Parlin, New Jersey. This collection consists of seven panormaic photographs that show views of the Parlin, New Jersey plant, including views of production facilities and worker housing.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. The Fabrics and Finishes Department produced DuPont's consumer lines of paints and finishes. Duco was a durable, quick-drying lacquer used for appliances. It was the standard finish for GM vehicles. Dulux was glossier, which made it more popular than Duco. Lucite paint was introduced in the 1950s and was less expensive and more durable than its predecessors. This small collection consists of one album of photographs of finishes facilities (i.e., Refinish Service Warehouses/wholesale) and retail paint stores.
